: :  Rhinoplasty : :

The nose is often the part of our face that people notice at first glance. Because of this, many people feel self-conscious about their nose, whether due to its size or shape. If you feel less than satisfied with your nose, Rhinoplasty (nose surgery) might be the answer for you. Rhinoplasty is one of the most common options for people choosing plastic surgery as a way of improving their physical appearance. Rhinoplasty can alter your appearance in different ways, such as by reducing or increasing the size of your nose, changing the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrowing the span of the nostrils, changing the angle between your upper lip and your nose, or correcting a birth defect or injury. Sometimes Rhinoplasty can help relieve breathing problems.

If you think Rhinoplasty may be the answer you are looking for, we recommend you read our guidelines below for further information:

How to prepare for treatment
On your first consultation, your cosmetic surgeon will ask you about what you would like to change about your nose and your expectations about plastic surgery. The cosmetic surgeon will evaluate the structure of your nose and face then discuss various options with you. You should inform your surgeon about any previous nose surgery or nose injury.
Your cosmetic surgeon will guide you on how to prepare for the surgery: how to eat, drink, smoke and take or avoid some certain vitamins and medications, and also how to wash your face. Your surgeon will also explain the factors that could influence the procedure and the results, such as the structure of your nasal bones and cartilage, the shape of your face, the thickness of your skin, and so on. An explanation of the requirements for anesthesia, as well as the risks and costs involved, will also be provided. Please inform your plastic surgeon about any allergies or breathing difficulties you may experience as the result of taking any medications, vitamins, recreational drugs, or smoking.
Prior to surgery, you should ask as many questions as possible and clarify any concerns you have regarding the expected outcome. Rhinoplasty should be undertaken only after considerable thought and discussion with experienced professionals. Rhinoplasty is not considered appropriate for teenagers due to the emotional and physical adjustments required after surgery.

How long does face-lift surgery take?
Normally, Rhinoplasty takes only a few hours, but may take longer if more complicated surgical procedures are required.

How is a surgery performed?
Rhinoplasty may start from within the nose where an incision is made inside the nostrils. However, some cosmetic surgeons start by making a small incision across the columella, the vertical strip of tissue that separates the nostrils. The skin of the nose will be separated from its support framework of bone and cartilage. Your cosmetic surgeon will choose a suitable technique and also make a decision on the shape of the sculpting based on previous experience and the desired outcome. The surgeon will then re-drape the patient’s skin over the new framework.
After the Rhinoplasty surgery is complete, a splint is used to support the nose maintaining its new shape. Your cosmetic surgeon will also place nasal packs or soft plastic splints into your nostrils for stabilizing the septum, which is the dividing wall between the air passages.

How long will it take to recover from the treatment?
Your cosmetic surgeon will discuss what to expect after surgery and the best method of post-operative care. Your surgeon may prescribe pain medication, as well as offer some of the following suggestions:
  • Any discomfort such puffiness in the face, nose ache, or dull headache, can be controlled by taking pain medication which will be prescribed by your cosmetic surgeon.
  • You should stay in bed with your head elevated for the first day after surgery.
  • You should apply cold compresses to reduce the swelling and bruising around your eyes. This will also minimize any feeling of discomfort. The swelling and bruising will disappear within 2 weeks after surgery.
  • Your surgeon will recommend that you not blow your nose for a week or so in order to let the tissues heal.
  • You should avoid strenuous activities like jogging, swimming, bending, sexual relations or any other activities that increase your blood pressure for a couple weeks.
  • You should avoid getting your nose sunburned, or hitting or rubbing your nose for 8 weeks.
  • You should take things easy for the first week after surgery and be gentle with your face and hair while washing or using cosmetics.
  • You should not wear glasses until your nose is completely healed, but if needed contact lenses can be worn a couple of weeks after surgery.
  • It is important to schedule follow-up appointments with your surgeon, in order to check on the progress of your healing following surgery.
  • If you experience any unusual symptoms, these should be reported to your surgeon immediately.
  • Try to get plenty of rest and allow your body to spend its energy on healing.
  • You should avoid reaching any conclusions about the outcome of the surgery until the results are fully known, usually 1-2 weeks after surgery.

It is important to discuss any questions or concerns you may have with your surgeon before you leave the hospital, to ensure you are fully aware of what to expect after surgery.

What are the risks involved?
Since each patient varies greatly according to anatomy, physical reaction, and healing ability, the outcome of cosmetic surgery is never completely predictable. Your cosmetic surgeon will discuss the medical risks associated with the procedure with you during consultation. The surgeon will encourage you to raise as many questions or concerns as possible. Before surgery, you will be required to sign a consent form stating that you have been informed about the risks involved and you understand and accept those risks. The surgeon will not commence any treatment until the consent form has been signed.
It is important to remember that you can minimize the risks of surgery by closely following your cosmetic surgeon’s advice both before and after surgery.
