As Chin augmentation surgery is a procedure whereby the underlying structure of the face around the jaw line is altered, to improve facial symmetry and proportion. It is commonly performed in conjunction with rhinoplasty (nose surgery) to ensure optimal balance between the nose and chin is maintained or improved. |

Is chin augmentation surgery right for you? Ideally, candidates for mentoplasty should be in good physical and emotional health, and have realistic expectations of the outcome of surgery.
Mentoplasty is commonly performed in conjunction with rhinoplasty, but is also used to correct a congenital abnormality or facial trauma.
In some cases, mentoplasty is not required to achieve the desired result. Alternative procedures, such as liposuction of the neckline or orthodontic work, can successfully improve the appearance of the jaw line. |

How is chin augmentation surgery performed? A variety of procedures can be used in mentoplasty, these will be explained to you in detail by your cosmetic surgeon. The most common procedure involves the insertion of a silicone chin implant through an incision made inside the mouth or under the chin.
In other cases, the desired result may be achieved by injecting a tissue augmentation ‘filler’ into the area. Some instances may require the reshaping of the existing bone structure around the chin and jaw line.
It is important to discuss your expectations fully with your cosmetic surgeon at your initial consultation. Your surgeon can explain the most suitable procedure for your individual circumstances. |

How is chin augmentation surgery performed? In most cases, an incision is made inside the mouth, where the gum and lower lip meet. Alternatively, an incision may be made in the skin under the chin.
Where an implant is required, it is simply inserted through the incision and positioned in place. The incision is then closed with sutures.
Mentoplasty surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia, or local anesthesia with sedation.
| |
How long does the surgery take? Mentoplasty usually takes around 45 minutes to one hour.
| |
How long will it take to recover? It is common for patients to experience some pain and swelling after surgery. Your cosmetic surgeon will prescribe medication to minimize these symptoms.
Chewing may be limited for the first few days, and a liquid or soft food diet may be necessary. Normal activity can be resumed after 10 days, although rigorous activity should be limited for the first few weeks after surgery.
Swelling can be expected to fully disappear within 6 weeks after surgery.
What are the risks involved? All surgery involves some degree of risk, including the risk of infection and adverse reaction to anesthetic. Swelling, bruising and localized pain are common after mentoplasty surgery but usually subside within the following days or weeks.
Where chin augmentation involves the insertion of a silicone implant, there is a risk that the implant will shift, necessitating further surgery.
Numbness of the chin area and the lips is also a common complication. This usually subsides in 2 to 3 weeks after surgery.
By closely following the instructions of your cosmetic surgeon, any risks associated with this procedure will be minimized.
