Blepharoplasty is a surgical technique designed to improve the appearance of the upper and lower eyelids. Patients may choose to have the procedure performed on their upper or lower eyelids only, or both.
The procedure is commonly perfomed by removing excess skin and fat from the eyelid area, giving the eyes a more refreshed and youthful appearance. Patients opting for blepharoplasty are generally over 35 years of age, with drooping upper eyelids and puffy bags in the lower eyelid area. Blepharoplasty will provide a more youthful look, but will not eliminate crow’s feet or remove dark circles under the eyes.
Blepharoplasty can also be used to add a crease to the upper eyelid of Asian eyes. This specific technique, known as Asian blepharoplasty or double-eyelid surgery (also called Oriental blepharoplasty or Asian eyelid surgery) is designed to give patients of Asian descent a more bright-eyed appearance by making a crease in the upper eyelid. As the result is subtle, it will not alter the racial appearance of the patient. |

Is blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) right for you? Eyelid surgery is best suited to those in good physical and psychological health, who are realistic in their expectations of the outcome of surgery.
It is important to discuss your medical history with your surgeon, as there are a number of conditions that can make blepharoplasty surgery more risky. These include thyroid problems, Graves’ disease, ‘dry eye’ (insufficient tears), high blood pressure, circulatory disorders, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.
Some eye conditions, such as glaucoma and detached retina, can also increase the risk of eyelid surgery. Your surgeon may request an examination from a qualified ophthalmologist prior to undertaking eyelid surgery. |

How is the surgery performed? Upper blepharoplasty is performed through an incision made in the crease of the upper eyelid. Excess skin and fat are removed, and the incision is then closed with fine sutures, which leave an almost invisible scar.
In lower blepharoplasty surgery, an inconspicuous incision is made just below the lash line. Excess skin and fat are removed and the incision is closed with fine sutures. Occasionally, the surgeon will make an incision inside the lower eyelid (transconjunctival blepharoplasty). This technique will remove excess skin, but no excess fat.
Asian blepharoplasty involves the removal of a small amount of excess skin and fat in the upper eyelid. The incision line is hidden in the newly created eyelid crease. |

How long does the surgery take? Patients often feel some discomfort from bruising and swelling after surgery: this can be controlled by medication prescribed by your surgeon.
Sutures are usually removed within one week after surgery, and discoloration subsides within 2 to 3 weeks. It may take several months for the swelling to disappear completely and the scars to fade.
Normal activity can be resumed as soon as the patient feels ready- most patients return to work within a week to 10 days after surgery. Contact lenses can be worn again 2 weeks after surgery, but may feel uncomfortable for a while. As the eyes are often sensitive for several weeks after surgery, your surgeon will normally recommend wearing sunglasses when outdoors.

What are the risks? Compared to other types of cosmetic surgery, the risks and complications of blepharoplasty are generally minor.
Temporary visual disturbances, such as blurring and sensitivity to light, are common and usually disappear completely a few weeks after surgery. Occasionally, patients have difficulty closing their eyes when they are sleeping, and in rare cases this may be permanent.
Ectropion- a ‘pulling down’ of the lower eyelid- is a very rare complication that usually requires additional surgery.
By closely following the instructions of your cosmetic surgeon, any risks associated with this procedure will be minimized.
